A new IWF (Internet Watch Foundation) safety campaign aims to help parents have conversations with their children about keeping their 'door' closed to child sexual abusers. The campaign includes a booklet for parents, explaining the risks, explaining why children are vulnerable, and suggests practice steps that parents can take.

The mnemonic used in the campaign is TALK:

TALK to your child about online sexual abuse. Start the conversation – and listen to their concerns.
AGREE ground rules about the way you use technology as a family.
LEARN about the platforms and apps your child loves. Take an interest in their online life.
KNOW how to use tools, apps and settings that can help to keep your child safe online.

Public Health are offering free online courses for residents of Devon, Torbay and Plymouth.

The Solihull Approach parenting courses are for everyone - anyone who wants to be the best mum, dad, grandparent, carer that they can be. The Solihull Approach aims to improve emotional health and wellbeing by supporting relationships. The courses are written by CAMHS professionals with other health and education workers. They are evidence based and accredited by the DfE.

Free School Meals to be extended over the summer holidays

Children in England who are eligible for free school meals will receive vouchers to cover the summer holiday period, after a campaign by Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford.

A spokesman for the prime minister announced that all children eligible for free school meals during term time in England will continue to be provided for through a 'COVID-19 Summer Food Fund', estimated to be around £120 million.

The decision will provide around 1.3 million children with meals throughout the summer holidays.

If you are on a low income, you maybe entitled to claim for free school meals. The criteria for free school meals is on the government's website.

The update includes information about apps parents and children can use to safeguard children online.

The BBC have a website and app called Own It . The website has a lot of content for children to help them navigate their online lives, and the free smartphone app comes with a special keyboard which can intervene with help and support in the moments that children need it the most. It can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

There is also SafeToNet which is an app for parents to help you safeguard your children from online risks like cyberbullying and sexting, whilst respecting their child’s rights to privacy. The SafeToNet Foundation is providing UK families with free access to 1 million licences during coronavirus.

Update from Executive Headteacher

Dear Parents, Carers and Staff,

I am sure you will have heard the Prime Minister’s address on Sunday 10th May in which he stated that:

“At the earliest by June 1 – after half term – we believe we may be in a position to begin the phased reopening of shops and to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beginning with reception, Year 1 and Year 6. Our ambition is that secondary pupils facing exams next year will get at least some time with their teachers before the holidays.”

All schools across the country, heard this news for the first time on Sunday and we have now received more detailed guidance from the government. We are currently working our way through this and planning how we can be ready to open the school to the year groups identified, in a safe way.

We will continue to offer day care places for vulnerable children and those of key workers, but we understand that many other parents will want to know more about when their children will return to school, reviewing this as the guidance changes. In preparation for this measured reopening, governors have decided that the federation schools will be closed to all children for the scheduled half term week, 25th May - 28th May, reopening to the specified year groups, as well as for vulnerable children and those of key workers on the 1st June.

Government advice today clarifies that nursery age children will also be included in this reopening, noting:

“ We know that, unlike older children and adults, early years and primary age children cannot be expected to remain 2 metres apart from each other and staff."

and

"It is still important to reduce contact between people as much as possible, and we can achieve that and reduce transmission risk by ensuring children, young people and staff where possible, only mix in a small, consistent group and that small group stays away from other people and groups."

These challenges are being carefully considered as we plan our gradual reopening schedule. We aim to be able to offer some time in school to the specified year groups each week, to continue online learning activities while maintaining the support to our vulnerable children and those of key workers also. We are also planning to enable the roll out of these openings to all year groups eventually, in line with the governments aspirations. Staff will be contacted regarding their return to work later in the week and once we have confirmed arrangements we will let you know our full plans early next week.

In the meantime, it would be appreciated if parents could avoid contacting school directly.

Trespassing on Railway Lines

Due to the very high level of trespassing on the tracks by young people in our local area, Network Rail in partnership with Learn Live are working to help raise awareness to students across the UK educating them about the dangers of the train tracks through interactive digital delivery.

School Closure

Dear Parents and Carers,

As I am sure you are now aware, the Government has taken the decision to close schools from Friday 20th March. From next week our school’s focus will move to an educational day care role, where the formal curriculum will be relaxed. We are evolving plans for how the school will be open, in response to government announcements, which we are hearing at the same time as you. We are currently carrying out a feasibility study looking at school hours and opening to key workers children, during the planned Easter holidays, to help with essential child care to support people to attend work.

We will also be in direct contact with parents of vulnerable pupils to discuss arrangements with them.

Additionally, we are finalising plans to provide a range of educational activities on-line, each week, for all children to access at home. Details will follow.

We feel it is a great privilege that the Government has called upon schools to play their part in combating COVID-19 and in supporting our pupils and communities in this unprecedented time. I know that with your support, we will be able to look back on this crisis and say that together, we played our part and pulled together.

The government has asked parents to keep their children at home , wherever possible , and asked schools to remain open only for those children who absolutely need to attend.

It is important to underline that schools, colleges and other educational establishments remain safe places for children. But the fewer children making the journey to school, and the fewer children in educational settings, the lower the risk that the virus can spread and infect vulnerable individuals in wider society.

Schools are, therefore, being asked to continue to provide care for a limited number of children

- children who are vulnerable

- children whose parents are critical to the Covid-19 response and cannot be safely cared for at home.

Vulnerable children include children who are supported by social care, those with safeguarding and welfare needs, including child in need plans, on child protection plans, ‘looked after’ children, young carers, disabled children and those with education, health and care (EHC) plans .

Parents whose work is critical to the COVID-19 response include those who work in health and social care and in other key sectors outlined below. Many parents working in these sectors may be able to ensure their child is kept at home. And every child who can be safely cared for at home should be.

Please, therefore, follow these key principles:

1. If it is at all possible for children to be at home, then they should be.

2. If a child needs specialist support, is vulnerable or has a parent who is a critical worker, then educational provision will be available for them.

3. Parents should not rely for childcare upon those who are advised to be in the stringent social distancing category such as grandparents, friends, or family members with underlying conditions.

4. Parents should also do everything they can to ensure children are not mixing socially in a way which can continue to spread the virus. They should observe the same social distancing principles as adults.

If your work is critical to the COVID-19 response, or you work in one of the critical sectors listed below, and you cannot keep your child safe at home then your children will be prioritised for education provision :

Health and social care

This includes but is not limited to doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, social workers, care workers, and other frontline health and social care staff including volunteers; the support and specialist staff required to maintain the UK’s health and social care sector; those working as part of the health and social care supply chain, including producers and distributers of medicines and medical and personal protective equipment.

Education and childcare

This includes nursery and teaching staff, social workers and those specialist education professionals who must remain active during the COVID-19 response to deliver this approach.

Key public services

This includes those essential to the running of the justice system, religious staff, charities and workers delivering key frontline services, those responsible for the management of the deceased, and journalists and broadcasters who are providing public service broadcasting.

Local and national government

This only includes those administrative occupations essential to the effective delivery of the COVID-19 response or delivering essential public services such as the payment of benefits, including in government agencies and arms length bodies.

Food and other necessary goods

This includes those involved in food production, processing, distribution, sale and delivery as well as those essential to the provision of other key goods (for example hygienic and veterinary medicines).

Public safety and national security

This includes police and support staff, Ministry of Defence civilians, contractor and armed forces personnel (those critical to the delivery of key defence and national security outputs and essential to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic), fire and rescue service employees (including support staff), National Crime Agency staff, those maintaining border security, prison and probation staff and other national security roles, including those overseas.

Transport

This includes those who will keep the air, water, road and rail passenger and freight transport modes operating during the COVID-19 response, including those working on transport systems through which supply chains pass.

Utilities, communication and financial services

This includes staff needed for essential financial services provision (including but not limited to workers in banks, building societies and financial market infrastructure), the oil, gas, electricity and water sectors (including sewerage), information technology and data infrastructure sector and primary industry supplies to continue during the COVID-19 response, as well as key staff working in the civil nuclear, chemicals, telecommunications (including but not limited to network operations, field engineering, call centre staff, IT and data infrastructure, 999 and 111 critical services), postal services and delivery, payments providers and waste disposal sectors.

If workers think they fall within the critical categories above they should confirm with their employer that, based on their business continuity arrangements, their specific role is necessary for the continuation of this essential public service.

If your school is closed or you are not offered a place, then please contact your local authority , who will seek to redirect you to a local school in your area that your child, or children, can attend.

To help us I our planning we would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions, if you feel you are going to need child care, as you have no alternative provision, while you are at work. Geography/ English: We would like children to explore the topic of Africa. Please could they research the following questions:

What is a national park? Why are they important?

Children can present their findings as a fact file about Kenya. Please can you remind children to use headings and sub-headings in their writing. Over the next two weeks we will be learning about Neil Armstrong as part of our history topic. You can:

How did Neil Armstrong get to space? (Write simple sentences about the date he went, the name of the rocket - Saturn and Eagle, how long it took, what Neil said when he landed.) COVID 19 Update Wednesday 18th March

Good Morning,

Sports clubs at both schools are continuing as normal, however there will be no sports trips or fixtures against other schools before the Easter holidays.

As mentioned yesterday, online educational activity suggestions will be posted on the school's websites later today, we hope that you and your children find these interim suggestions for home learning useful. You will find these in the blog section on the websites.

If your child has been absent from school and you have notified the office that you are self isolating, please rest assured that we have appropriately recorded this on your child’s attendance register. The self isolation coding and illness coding will be taken into account when we review absences, particularly at this unprecedented time. Where families are following government guidance, absences will be recorded as authorised.

If your child has been isolated this week, they must not return to school until after the Easter holidays on the 14th April.

Finally, we will be sending home a separate email today, inviting nominations for any parents who would like to become a parent governor. This is a great opportunity for a parent from one of our schools to support all pupils, through being a partner in the strategic leadership of the federation.

COVID 19 Update Tuesday 17th March

Please see the key messages regarding Covid 19 from the Department for Education and the Local Education Authority:

"What you need to know - latest from the DfE

staff, young people and children should stay at home if they are unwell with a new, continuous cough or a high temperature to avoid spreading infection to others. Otherwise they should attend education or work as normal.
if staff, young people or children become unwell on site with a new, continuous cough or a high temperature they should be sent home

unless you have been directly advised to close by the local Public Health England Health Protection Team, we continue to recommend all education settings remain open"

If you and your family are self-isolating, in line with government advice, please inform the school as soon as you can. We will record the illness or self isolation on your child’s attendance records. We have been advised by the education welfare department to record absences that are not in line with government guidance, on illness or self isolating, as an unauthorised absence.

Please be reassured that in school we are following government advice, washing hands, monitoring people’s health and maintaining lessons as usual. We know that parents are making the right decisions for their children, in applying the government advice, when deciding to either keep children at home or send them to school as usual. We will continue to adapt our procedures and guidance to you , as the government amend their advice to us all.

The scheduled parents evenings next week at will be postponed . These were due to happen at Wynstream and Montgomery schools . We will reschedule them as soon as possible, thank you for your understanding.

Coronavirus: Public Information

No doubt you will be aware of the issues related to Coronavirus (COVID 19). We want to work with you to ensure that young people are sensitively informed and supported and they continue to come into school every day. In light of this, we have collated key information below to support you and your child/ren.

Information regarding Coronavirus (COVID 19)

Please be reassured that we are monitoring updates and advice rigorously from the Department of Education (DfE), Department of Health, Public Health England (PHE) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. There is no reason for your child not to be attending school at this time.

Current guidance issued by the government can be accessed here . Devon County Council has also produced information which can be found here .

As always, we are maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness within the School and we are supporting all our pupils and staff to maintain high standards of basic personal hygiene. Soap dispensers are being checked and refilled regularly to ensure there is always sufficient supply and staff will talk with the pupils about the importance of thorough hand washing. A poster is displayed in each classroom with guidance and a copy is above.

We are not aware of any pupils who have visited any of the affected areas. We would appreciate parents’ vigilance with this and to inform the school if they are aware of any contact with travellers returning from the affected areas. Specific advice has now been updated from the Government for returning travellers . If you have recently travelled and returned from any of the areas listed in the link, the advice from Public Health England is:

Category 1: Travellers should self-isolate, even if asymptomatic, and call NHS 111 to inform of recent travel.

Category 2: Travellers do not need to undertake any special measures, but if they develop symptoms, they should self-isolate and call NHS 111.

Our school continues to remain open as usual. We will continue to follow all Public Health England guidance and advice to ensure the health and well-being of all pupils and staff remains our priority.

We have had some interesting visitors in school this week...

Chris from South West Animal Services has been in school and brought in a brilliant mixture of animals for the children to meet!
During the sessions we talked about the habitats that these different animals live in and the life cycles that they go through.
It was an amazing experience for lots of us who had never seen or touched these animals before!

Willow visit Killerton's Apple Festival

They picked and pressed their own apples, found out how cider and apple juice was made and even tried some apple juice!

Willow's quilting update

Willow class have worked hard over the last 4 weeks on their quilting projects.
We will be visiting Killerton on Tuesday to take part in their apple festival.

Families are invited to visit Killerton for their Big Pick weekend on Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October. This event is free for the family members of Willow class, just tell visitor’s reception you are from Montgomery Primary School where you will be given a voucher. (This does not give admission to the house or gardens.)

The pupil’s quilts will be on display at the Apple Festival on the 12th & 13th October (adults £10, children £5) where there will be live music, hog roast, family activities and local food and apple products.

If you are unable to attend the festival, the quilts will also be displayed 3:30 – 5:30pm on Friday 11th October at no cost.

After being displayed, pupil’s art work will be returned to school for the children to take home.

Email is a great communication tool and has become a part of our everyday lives. As a school, the number of emails we receive has increased substantially over the last few years. Please be patient when waiting for a reply as it can be up to 3-5 working days (but usually sooner). We have had a minority of parents sending a follow-up email on the same day as the first email when no reply has been received within a few hours. Staff are extremely busy during the day with the children and only have a small window in which to respond to emails. This week as part of our “Super me’ topic the children in EYFS took part in a brilliant superhero day.

They dazzled us with their best superhero moves at a superhero disco, took part in a variety of superhero games that showcased their super powers, showed us their super skills at our Superhero Academy, created some amazing superhero self- portraits and shared a range of superhero stories!

Young Minds

On Thursday the 10th of October, Montgomery will be raising money for the charity 'Young Minds'. Young Minds is the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young peoples mental health. They are driven by young peoples experience to create change so that children and young people can cope with life’s adversities, find help when needed and succeed in life.

We would like everyone to wear something yellow on this day. Whether you choose a subtle splash of yellow or dress like sunshine from head-to-toe, together we can show young people they’re not alone with their mental health.

We will also be running a competition called ‘Dress up the Teacher’ in which the children will need to bring in yellow clothes or props to dress their class teacher up, this could include hats, sunglasses, bracelets, scarves, stickers, socks – you can be as creative as you like! All the dressed up teachers will stand at the front of the assembly so that everyone can vote for the best dressed (whoever is wearing the most yellow of course!). The winning teacher’s class will receive a prize.

Reading, Spellings and Times Tables

All the children are now set up with a reading book, a set of spellings and a set of times tables to focus on for the week.

Reading

It is extremely important that the children are finding time to read on a daily basis, even if it is only a couple of pages a night. You should focus on questioning the children on what they have read to deepen their comprehension and inference skills.
Time is being dedicated within school to developing the children's vocabulary. You can support the learning of new and exciting words by talking to your child about the meaning of any unknown words they come across in the texts they are reading. The aim is that they will then apply these words to their writing.

Each child has been given their login details for the Timetable Rockstars App. Please can you allow time for the children to practise at home. Willow class quilting project

Willow class have been fortunate enough to work with some lovely volunteers from Killerton National Trust.
They each picked a season and planned what they would like to put on their quilt square. The children then cut out their designs from different fabrics and some chose to print part of their designs. They are currently in the process of sewing their designs on ready to be quilted.
More information to follow on the dates that the final pieces will be available to view at Killerton.

Plant science in year 5

Our topic this half term is living things and their habitats.
In our first science lesson of the year we looked at the life cycle of flowers and how they reproduce.
To find all the important parts of a flower involve din reproduction we dissected them and labelled the different parts.
It was interesting to see the different parts through a magnifying glass included the ovules!

Spellings and Times Tables

In Year 3, homework is handed out every Friday, and needs to be handed back in the following Thursday. Each child is given five words from the Year 3 National Curriculum and a set of times tables to practise each week. This week's words are below. Once your child has practised their spellings, they need to put the words in a sentence using the lines at the bottom of their spelling sheet.
For example - I got to the address and rang the doorbell but there was no answer.

Over the course of this week, we have been testing the children on their Year 1 and Year 2 common misconception words. We have noted that many of the children have got gaps in these spellings. To support your child and aid their learning of these words, we have given them a spelling sheet. You can see from the picture below, that the words that have been highlighted are the words that they can spell correctly, the other words are what they will need to learn. They do not need to bring this sheet in each week as they are to be practised at home in preparation for retesting closer to half term.

We have had a great day today picking our new class rules, discussing our summers and learning about how to work as a team. We decided that to work well as a team you need to listen, communicate, respect each other and share.
In groups, we made towers. We tried to make the tallest and sturdiest tower we could that would hold a large dice.

First day back!

We would like congratulate the children on a successful first day in year 3. They all managed to find their way up the stairs and into their correct classes, promptly and quietly.

The main focus for this week is to settle the children into their new environment and to set up the routines and expectations for the year. Today, we have spent some time discussing class rules, what a Montgomery role model looks like and setting personal targets for the year.

Miss Gowing, Mr Gill and the year 3 teaching team look forward to getting to know all of the children over the course of this week.

A few house keeping notes that have arose during the day:
- Water bottles must contain only water and not fruit juices.
- Snacks must be a healthy option and packed into their school bag (the bag that comes into the classroom).
- Please can you label school uniform clearly and in a permanent marker.
- PE kit needs to be in school on Wednesday and Thursday each week.

Year 5 had a great time last Friday at Haven Banks.
They kayaked along the River Exe in some very windy conditions and worked as a team to build and sail rafts!

Three groups of year 5 children were selected to go to Colyton Science Fair after winning an in school competition.

The children enjoyed the day where they talked about their experiments, enjoyed a physics lesson and took part in lots of different experiments.

Although they didn't win the fair, they had a great time seeing the experiments other children from different schools had done and learning about the world of science.

Today we learnt about reversible and irreversible changes.

As part of our materials topic in science, Year 5 learnt about reversible and irreversible changes.
A reversible change is where you can turn a material back to how it started, for example melting chocolate in the sun and then cooling it back to a solid.
Irreversible changes happen when materials mix and make new materials, you can't turn them back to how they started, for example when baking a cake.

We shook double cream for 10 minutes to see what would happen. After 5 minutes we had made whipped cream, then a liquid and solid started to form after more shaking. We removed the liquid and cleaned the solid. We has made butter! This was an irreversible change.
It was very tasty!

Willow Car Wash Success

Habitats, minibeasts and ice-cream!

Year 3 had an action packed morning at the Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve. The focus of our learning was looking at different habitats to discover which animals live there and the adaptations they have made to survive and thrive.

We looked in woodland areas and found a variety of different mini beasts. We searched under logs, on leaves and in damp, moist areas. Amazingly, we found beetles, worms, spiders, slugs, snails and even toads.

We went pond dipping to discover which animals lived in the water. Close to the weeds were the best places to capture them. We gathered our findings into trays and before identifying them.

We used guides to help us identify our samples. We discovered that we had netted a lot of small insect larvae and nymphs.

We took it in turns to brush the grassland to see if we could find any other different kinds of animals. We mainly caught grasshoppers and crickets.

Finally, we headed down to the beach in pursuit of any other signs of live. Although we didn't find any living animals, we did find clues as to what does live around the shore.

No trip to the beach is complete without an ice-cream! All the children topped of their adventure with a delicious treat!

Chorister outreach programme final performance

This is a reminder for all those children involved in today's Chorister Outreach performance @ Exeter Cathedral.
You need to be there for 1.30pm - 2:30pm.
The concert will begin at 4.30pm and will last around 50 mins.
The children will be free to collect at 5.30pm.
*Please can you be prompt with the collection of your child as supporting members of staff have got other engagements to attend shortly after.
We have been notified of the children who are unable to attend over the course of the last week. Please consider that your child has been selected on the basis of showing a talent or passion for singing so we strongly encourage you to get your children to this fantastic event.

Chorister Outreach Programme - Concert Day Arrangements

Concert Day - Saturday 15th June 2019 in Exeter Cathedral.

Please ensure that children have had lunch and been to the toilet before they arrive

1.30-2.00 pm Children arrive, are given space to leave coats etc. and are allocated space in the performing area.

2.15 pm Rehearsals begin with opportunities for schools to rehearse their individual items as well as the songs involving everyone. Procedures for getting “on and off” stage will also be rehearsed.

4.00 pm Rehearsal ends and break. (Children may wish to bring some refreshments.)

4.20 pm All performers to get into position “offstage”.

4.30 pm Concert. This will last approx. 50 minutes so children should be free to go around 5.30pm.

No tickets are required as there is no charge for entry although there will be a retiring collection with proceeds towards the Outreach Project funds.

The children should come dressed in their school uniform.

Although the children will be fully occupied for most of the afternoon, they remain the responsibility of their school staff at all times.

The Year 3 fair is quickly approaching, but there is still plenty of time to guess the amount of sweets in the jar and guess the name of the teddy! It is 20p a go and the winners will be revealed in Monday's assembly.

On Friday, don't forget to bring your £1 admission which entitles you to 5 tickets, a glass of juice and a biscuit. There are loads of prizes to be won and plenty of fun to be had!

Year 5, Birch Class, are raising money for Cancer Research.

They have set up an amazing raffle, 50p for 1 ticket of £1 for 3.

They are also doing a lemonade stand on Thursday 13th June before and after school.
It will be 50p for a medium and £1 for a large.

Year 3 Enterprise Week - Monty Fair!

Roll up! Roll up! Will you be a winner?

As part of Enterprise Week, year 3 have discussed how we could turn a profit on our £30 start up fund. We spent time discussing things that we could make or buy and how we could present and sell them to make a quick quid!

Because we had so many fantastic ideas, we decided to create a small fair to allow as many of these ideas to be put into practise! The fair is open to the whole school (EYFS - YR6) and will be £1 entry. In return for the entry fee, the children will receive 5 tickets to be used at the stalls, a refreshment and a biscuit. If the children would like to buy more tickets, they will be available at 10p per ticket.

What you need to know;

Date: 14th June.
Where : School playground or sports hall (TBC weather dependent).
What: school fair with a range of fun and exciting activities that will be lead by the pupils in year 3.
Who: year 3
Why: To think about the value of money within an engaging and real life context. The profit that is made will be used to fund a treat for the year group.

For only 20p a go, we are currently running two competitions as part of our Enterprise week project.

The first competition is trying to guess the amount of sweets in the jar. The person who guesses the correct amount, or the person who guesses closest to the correct amount, will win the jar of sweets.

Can you guess the name of our adorable bear? The pupils have come up with 100 possible names for the bear. All you need to do is pick the right name to win in it.

Both competitions can be found at the front reception, or you can grab Mr Gill, Miss Gowing or Mr Inglis after school everyday this week!

Absorption science experiment

Year 5s current science topic is materials where we have been looking the properties and uses of a variety of materials.

We conducted fair tests to see which materials are the most absorbent and would be the best to clean up a spillage in the classroom!
Most of us discovered kitchen roll was the most absorbent because it has lots of air spaces inside, compared to paper which is the least absorbent and has fewer air spaces.

It's fantastic news for the Monty Sports Stars over the past 2 weeks! Well done to the U11 Girls football team who finished 2nd in the recent tournament and have progressed through to the football county finals next week! Amazing team work shown during each game! Secondly, it’s gold for the Monty Golfers! Montgomery Super Sixes Golf team secured the gold medal position and are through to the County Finals being held in Plymouth this Summer term. Lastly, good luck to the Montgomery boys black team who are through to the EPFL championship finals this coming Monday, tough tournament but an amazing achievement! We are once again extremely proud of you all!

This term as part of our topic about vehicles the children in EYFS have enjoyed visits from the RNLI and Exeter Fire brigade. These visits have enabled the children to have some great hands on experiences, they have tried on a range of uniforms, handled specialist kit and equipment and asked LOTS of questions about the role the emergency services play! It has been wonderful to see the children embed these experiences within their learning.

Second Polling Day 23/5/19

As stated in the last newsletter we have been informed by Exeter City Council just this week that the school will be used as polling day IF the UK participates in the European Elections on Thursday 23rd May. As stated before, we have no control over whether the school is chosen as a polling station but it is down to the governors as to whether the school closes or not. Governors have agreed that due to the number of unchecked people on site and the opening of the external gates, it is not possible to safeguard the site effectively on these days. Given the lack of progress towards a Brexit agreement since the last newsletter, it should be assumed that we are a polling station on this date and that school will be closed. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

Science Outreach with Colyton Grammar School

In the Autumn term, Year 5 were visited by a physics teacher and students from Colyton Grammar School. In this session they learnt about friction, took part in experiments and made their own hover crafts.

Groups were given the task to create their own experiments and write them up including an aim, hypothesis, method, results, conclusion and evaluation.

In the Summer term, the teacher and students returned and spoke to each group about the experiments they had done and what they had learnt from doing them. 3 groups were chosen and invited back to Colyton Grammar School in July to take part in a science fair along with children from other schools. The groups were chosen for having an enthusiasm for science and an ability to explain and describe their experiments.

A huge well done to all the children in year 5 for taking part and a big thank you to the staff and students from Colton Grammar School for working with the children. They enjoyed taking part in the different practical activities.

West Exe Art Competition

Year 5s from local school took part in an art competition run by West Exe School. Children had to enter a piece of art work with the theme of 'local community'.
The competition winners were announced at the dress rehearsal of the play 'Grease' which the children really enjoyed watching.

The winner for Montgomery was Veronica.
The overall winner was Izzie.

Well done to all the children who submitted a piece of art work!

Year 5 Tag Rugby Competition

On 26th March year 5 joined the local primary schools at West Exe School.

Year 5 were split into 4 teams to compete in a tag rugby competition with local schools. The teams represented Wales, Ireland, Italy and New Zealand.
Overall, Italy came first and Wales came third.

Red Nose Day

Congratulations to the school parliament for organising a non-uniform day on Friday for Red Nose Day. We raised £263.50! They also arranged a cake sale that generated a further £108.18. Raising a grand total of £371.68!

Well done to the school parliament for being a dedicated group of young people who want to support and improve the lives of others.

In maths this week, we have been looking at calculating the area of rectangles by multiplying the length by the width. We used this to help us find the area of compound shapes by splitting them into 2 rectangles, finding the area of each one and adding them together.

In English we have invented or own cracking contraptions and written explanation texts that explain how they work.

In geography we have been learning about the different parts of a river and in science we dissected flowers and found out what all the different parts of a flower were called and what they did.

We have been looking at including fronted adverbials into our writing.

An adverbial is a word or phrase that has been used like an adverb to add detail or further information to a verb. (An easy way to remember what an adverb is: it adds to the verb. )

Adverbials are used to explain how, where or when something happened; they are like adverbs made up of more than one word.

For example:

In the sentences above, the verbs are in pink and the adverbials are in blue.

‘Fronted’ adverbials are ‘fronted’ because they have been moved to the front of the sentence, before the verb. In other words, fronted adverbials are words or phrases at the beginning of a sentence, used to describe the action that follows.

A comma is normally used after an adverbial (but there are plenty of exceptions to this rule).

Year 3 – Maths: Multiplication

This week, we have been multiplying a 1 digit number by a 2 digit number. We have been paying a lot of attention on the presentation and layout of our calculations.

Initially, we looked at calculations that didn’t require any carrying. Once we had grasped the process and concept, we moved on to calculations that required us to carry tens.

Top Tips:

Remember to put one digit in each box.

Remember to calculate the ones first.

Remember to carry any tens under the total bar in the tens column.

Remember to add the carried tens.

Below is an example of how we would calculate 37 x 4 using column multiplication.

Spellings

Each child is now being given a bespoke set of spellings which are individualised to their spelling needs. These spellings will be handed out on a Friday and handed back in on the following Thursday. Once the children have completed their spelling homework they may want to practise learning them in different ways. Below are a few ways that they could do this.

TT Rockstars

We have noticed a dip in the number of children who are using TT Rockstars to support the learning of their targeted sets of times tables. It is essential that the children are spending around 10 minutes a day practising as this will encourage rapid recall of the multiplication and division facts.

Reading

When reading with your children, please could you document what they have read in their homework diaries. This allows us to see how often the children are reading at home and can enable us to monitor those children who may need targeted reading interventions.

Year 4 Paignton Zoo trip

In English, year 4 have been researching endangered animals ready to write non-chronological reports. We decided that there was no better way to find out about animals than to see some, so on Wednesday, year 4 piled into the minibuses and drove down to Paignton Zoo.

The main reason for our visit was a workshop centred around endangered animals and conservation. We found out about why certain animals are threatened in the wild and what the zoo does to protect certain animals and their habitats. A lot of us knew how hunting can cause animals to become endangered but we also found out about how habitat destruction and pet trade plays a part in this. We were able to see animal skins and elephant tusks which the zoo looks after (the elephant task was worth a lot of money – more than some houses!)

Alongside the workshop, we managed to have a look around the zoo and see animals such as monkeys, lions, tigers, reptiles and crocodiles, to name a few! The sun even came out and the rain stayed away for us! The children were engaged, inquisitive Monty role models throughout the day and represented our school fantastically.

Year 3 – Science: Animals including humans

Our science focus has turned to looking at animals including humans. We will be learning about the skeletal system, the muscular system and diet.

We have discovered this week that there are animals that are classified as vertebrates and some that are invertebrates. We also discovered that some animals have a skeleton on the outside of their body.

Year 3 – Pop Art

We are looking at the Pop Art movement. We have focused on Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein; two highly influential artists of the movement.

We have looked at several different pieces of Pop Art and shared our views on what makes the style different to other styles. We agreed that the pictures are of everyday objects that have been created using bright colours and strong, bold outlines.

We are going to practise these techniques to create our own Rainforest inspired Pop Art!

Year 3 – English: Non – Chronological Report Writing

This term in year 3, we have an over arching theme of the Amazon Rainforest. We have tried to weave this through all of our learning, with English being no exception.

We have been looking at a variety of non – chronological reports to identify their key layout features as well as the sentence structure that is associated with these types of text.

A non – chronological report is a non -fiction text which gives information on a particular subject. It is sometimes called a non – chronological report as it gives information without referring to the order in which things happen.

We have used the Christmas home learning as a basis for the information that has gone into our reports.

Year 3 – Maths: Multiplication and Division

This week, we have been looking at the relationship between multiplication and division and how we can use this information to help us solve fluency, reasoning and problem solving questions.

Firstly, we have looked at comparing different mathematical statements using greater than, less than and equals symbols.

This is an example of a problem that the children have answered this week.

3×4 > 1×5

In words, this number sentence reads as three multiplied by four is greater than one multiplied by five.

Because 3×4 = 12 and 1×5 = 5, the statement is true.

We then moved on to looking at how we can use what we already know about or 12 times table, and apply it to calculations that may appear challenging.

This is an example of a problem that the children have answered this week.

If 4 x 4 = 16, I know that 40 x 4 is 160 because 40 is 10 times bigger than 4 so the answer will be ten times bigger.

Every Friday, the children are tested on the set of times tables that they have been practising. They receive a times table sheet to practise as part of their homework as well as having their specific times table focus set on the Times Table Rockstar app.

It is important that the children go into the garage section off the app, as this is where their focus times tables are set.

We have had an exciting week in year 5 this week. In maths we have started learning about area and perimeter and now know how to the find the perimeter of rectangles, squares and compound shapes. In English we have been looking at Wallace & Gromit’s cracking contraptions and writing our own explanations. On Wednesday we had a rock band workshop where some of us had a go at being in a rock band! In science we have planned and carried out our own experiments.

In our celebration assembly we celebrated children who had shown good team work, enthusiasm and improved presentation.

Rock Steady Music Workshops

On Wednesday 16th January, we will be hosting a musical workshop day that will be delivered by a school music provider called Rock Steady. The day will consist of a full school assembly to explain how Rock Steady can provide young children with the opportunity to learn an instrument and be a part of a band. Each year group will experience a 30 minute workshop where they will have the chance to play and discover new instruments.

From 3.15pm – 4.00pm, there will be an opportunity for parents to attend a question and answer session with the Rock Steady coordinator to find out how this fantastic opportunity could develop your children’s passion for music.

It would be great to see as many parents there as possible to support this event.

This week, we have been looking at how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) play an important role in problem solving.

We were set the task of creating a glider that would travel the furthest distance.

Science – We looked at the different forces that would be impacting on our gliders as it travels through the air. We looking specifically at thrust, drag, gravity and lift forces.

Engineering – The engineering aspect of our learning looked at how we made the gliders using the materials we had collected.

Mathematics – We used out mathematical skills to measure the length and width of our gliders as well as measuring the distances our gliders actually travelled.

What an amazing week!

Across the school we have been focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in year 5 we were set the challenge of making our very own balloon powered car.

They had a few basic instructions to follow and a set of materials they had to use, in groups they worked together to make the cars. Their first attempts didn’t move very far, some went in circles or flipped over, but they were excited to evaluate their designs and improve them.

After a group discussion, writing instructions, redesigning and making the car again we were much more successful!

Years 3, 4 + 5 learn lots about the bloodhound today from a special visitor, Roger Gibbs, who is a STEM ambassador. He told us all about the car that can go 1000mph! Some of the children had a go at recreating the parts of its engine.

This week, the children in all year groups will be getting involved in activities linked to STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths).

We kicked off the week with an informative talk by Phil Lynch from Colton Grammar School who told us about what STEM was, how different our lives would be without STEM and WOWed us with his hover craft!

Key Stage 2 also had a special guest, Steve Marianas from Exeter College, who told them about the exciting jobs and opportunities that are avaliable in STEM.

Over the course of this week each year group will be involved in a different project, from making buildings and bridges to boats, cars and planes!

Willow’s tour of nativities

Willow class had the opportunity to attend the Exeter Festival of Nativities at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Wonford Road.

The class had great fun looking the different nativity scenes, dressing up and making their own christmas cards.

Amazing Air Resistance

In our last science lesson we learnt about the effects of air resistance.

In groups we created parachutes and launched them out of the window in hope they would protect an egg!

We found that the larger parachutes with a big surface area fell slower, this was because they faced more air resistance which helped to protect the egg.

There were only a few breakages!

We have read the book and created story maps to help us remember and rehearse the story. Next, we will look at the structure of the story, thinking about how the story begins, what happens in the build up, what problem occurs, how the problem is resolved and finally how the story ends.

We were lucky enough to have an amazing team of people from Colyton Grammar school, in this morning. They were teaching us all about friction. We were apart of some very fun science experiments and got to complete some of our own.

We sat in hover chairs, had a tug of war over a yellow pages, rode skateboards and made our very own mini hover boards! It was a very exciting morning.

They will be back again next term to look at some of the experiments we complete in school.

Year 5 WW2 Evacuation Day

We had a great day in Year 5, imagining what it would have been like for children in WW2. They came to school dressed up as evacuees, with their bags packed and their name tags on.

We had some visitors from The South West Airfield Herratige Trust come into school in the morning who helped us learn more about Exeter during WW2.

With Christmas rapidly approaching and the nights drawing in, we have opted for a Christmas themed class story to complement the festive period. To spark curiosity and imaginative thinking in the children, we wrapped the book up like a present and played pass the parcel. With each layer of wrapping paper that was removed, a clue was revealed to provoke the children’s thoughts on what the book could be about. We had some fantastic predictions! We will see if they are correct.

The new class book is The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher.

Science: Forces

This week we have started a new topic in science. We have been looking at forces.

In our first lesson we looked at the force of gravity and learnt that the weight of an object is how hard gravity if pulling down on an object (measured in Newtons) and the mass of an object is how much matter is inside it (measured in g or kg).

Larger objects (like the Earth) have a greater pull of gravity.

Through an experiment, we found out that the mass of an object is 100x greater than its weight. So 1N = 100g.

In these photos we are using forcemeters to measure the weight and mass of objects around our classroom.

Year 5 Evacuee Day!

Our current topic is WW2, we have been looking at the impact it had on Exeter, the Blitz and how it would have felt to be a child back then.

The Monty Milers take on Killerton House

Montgomery recently participated in the annual Killerton House cross country event. We took children from across KS2 and competed against several other schools in the local area. The children had to face windy conditions, difficult terrain, as well as dodging a cow pat or two.

Every child completed the event and did the school proud. They were impeccably behaved, a credit to Montgomery, and a true competitors over the course of the event!

We look forward to find out the results over the next week!

A special mention must be given to Gemma Stringer (FOMS) who offered to design the new Monty Milers logo, and to FOMS themselves for offering to cover the costs of the new running attire. I think we can all agree that the children look amazing!

Year 5 visit Devon & Exeter Institution Library

On Thursday 8th and Friday 9th, year 5 visited Devon and Exeter Institution library where they enjoyed a workshop based on WW2.

The children were able to explore the library and see some of the features that survived the raids in Exeter during WW2. They also got to look at newspapers from the time of the war and see a book that had been hit by shrapnel. The children even found a secret door!

It was very interesting and a good introduction into our topic. We will be learning more about WW2 this term.

The Learning Journal

In Year 1 and Year 2 at Montgomery Primary, we share, celebrate and explore lots of different learning through Seesaw: The Learning Journal.

Avast ye……Its Pirate day in EYFS!

This Wednesday (11th July) we are inviting everyone to come in dressed as a pirate! (see what you can find but a stripey t shirt and pirate hat will be great!). We will be making eye patches, maps and telescopes at school with the children, so no need to provide these! We will spend the day dressed as Pirates and join in with pirate challenges and games.

Captain Sinker from Swashbucklers has been given an invitation to the ‘Pirate of the year awards’ but we need to make a ship that floats.

Please can you bring in any plastic food containers (mushroom, fruit trays, yogurt pots) that we can use to make ships!

Year 4 recently took a trip to St Thomas Library. The children had a story read to them, did a library quest and explored the books that the library have to offer.

Foodbank Trip

On Friday, most of our school parliament members went to Exeter Foodbank to donate all the food Montgomery had collected.

Amazingly, and with your support they were able to donate an incredible 85kg of food!

Once we arrived, it was clear we were going to have to work hard. There is a lot of organising that goes on at Foodbank! The children were able to volunteer to help weigh and sort the donations they had collected.

One part of the trip that really stuck out for our school parliament, was when Foodbank Manager, Mark Richardson, asked them to help bag the food for an elderly gentleman, who needed their help. The children were so excited to be able to help their local community!

After all their hard work and a few questions, there was even time for an ice-cream.

On behalf of our School parliament we want to say a HUGE thank you for your continued support, which allows these memories to be made!

Our EYFS Monty ‘Royal’ Wedding!

The children in Reception had an absolutely wonderful ‘Royal’ Wedding – the Monty way!

After weeks of preparing – making button holes, hair garlands, writing Love poems, making a wedding cake and designing our own mood boards for a wedding, the day had finally arrived…Monty’s own wedding!

We all arrived at school dressed as the guests and walked to St. Thomas Methodist Church, where the Minister, Julian Albrow, conducted a brilliant service. The children took part as guests and some starred as the Bride, Groom, Best Man, Bridesmaids and Page Boys!

We were talked though what happens in a Christian marriage ceremony, followed our Order of Service and sung ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ before leaving the church (accompanied by the pianist playing the traditional wedding march).

When we returned to school the children had a wedding reception and danced to the songs and played video clips of a real wedding band, before cutting the cake!

What a truly fantastic day. We are so proud of the children; their listening skills were superb and their work that has gone into the wedding has been excellent! Well done!

A special thank you to St Thomas Methodist Church for sharing your Church with us and ‘New Heroes’ Band for the brilliant video clips of the band that we danced along to!

Playing with water in the sunshine

The pupils in EYFS have had an amazing time outside enjoying the sunshine and playing with the water tray and equipment. They have been busy pouring water into different size containers, setting up water runs with plastic drainpipes, pouring water into different tubes, sailing boats and squirting it everywhere.

We have been super busy learning today with lots of activities to choose from: weaving with fabric in the woods, potato printing to help us learn 2 D shape names, confidence building on the rope swing and an obstacle course in the woods, dinosaur small world play, messy play with shaving foam and lots of writing opportunities.

Food Bank

On Monday we had a whole school assembly organised by the School Parliament to introduce everyone to the work the local food bank does.

School Parliament are planning on raising donations through support of children and parents. They will then visit the food bank and report back to the rest of the children, learning about what happens there and where the food goes.

Frankie has written this report that has been shared with the children:

The manager of Exeter Foodbank came to our school assembly on Monday 30th April.

You can bring in some food to donate to people who can’t afford it. They store food at the Orange Elephant until a family who needs it takes it home. All food has to be dried, tinned and longline.

Please bring in your donation by the 17th May. Some families find it very hard to afford their food. Even if you donate 1 can of baked beans you could make a difference. On busy weeks they give away about a tonne of food (that is the same weight as a fully grown polar bear!) Every week Exeter Foodbank give food to over 100 people. Last year they gave food to over 5000 people, including 17000 children.

Top priority items : Rice (500g) and loo rolls

Medium priority items: Rice pudding tins, fish (tuna) tins, tinned meat balls, pasta sauce, noodles and pasta snacks, sponge puddings, milk-UHT, semi-skimmed & instant coffee.

Spring is finally arriving here in Exeter after all of THAT snow!!
Although we all enjoyed the magic of the snow days, our little friends the birds didn’t! They’ve been left with a shortage of food. EYFS are going to celebrate Spring by making bird feeders and all of our lovely EYFS families are invited.

EYFS Potion Writing

We’ve had a great few days in EYFS and continued to learn our story ‘Dear Zoo’. This week we have innovated the story, Daisy class have now called their story ‘Dear Superhero’ and the Sunflower class’ new story is ‘Dear Space man’ ask your child to tell you their class version. Despite the freezing weather we have still enjoyed our outdoor provision. We have really loved making potions in the woods using lots of natural resources and then using our brilliant phonic knowledge to list the ingredients.

Dear Zoo

We’ve had a wonderful first day back in EYFS. Our new topic this term is ‘amazing animals.’ This morning we were introduced to our focus text ‘Dear Zoo.’ and we will be using a story map to learn the actions for this so that we can innovate the story later in the week. In Maths, we have started to take away 1 from a single digit number.
